Propecia side effects and alternatives | Natural DHT blockers review that work

Propecia or finasteride is a very popular drug employed to treat hair loss. Finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, widely used in the medical management of male pattern hairloss, has been reported to cause sexual side effects.

More specifically, Propecia is just a hair loss drug, however it comes with severe side effects such as for instance an increased danger of getting prostate cancer plus a number of sexual unwanted effects such as impotence problems, decreased libido and ejaculation problems.

Studies of the potential sexual side-effects of finasteride continued in the years that followed the 1992 report; however, the findings are not given much public attention because those using the drug had been mostly older men with enlarged prostates, making them more prone to underlying sexual dysfunction.

The research, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, reveals that finasteride-an antiandrogen that treats hair loss and is found in popular male pattern baldness drug Propecia-can cause persistent intimate dysfunction, including low sexual desire, erectile dysfunction and difficulties with orgasms.

More serious concern is that the sexual dysfunction triggered by Propecia might be permanent.

Why does the Propecia label still claim all instances of erectile dysfunction and reduced libido went away in men who stopped taking PROPECIA?

Nobody these days believes drug organizations exist for the benefit of mankind — they’re all just profit-seeking enterprises that spend more on advertising than research — but many assume the businesses at least bother about getting sued.

In many methods, the mechanism of finasteride is very easy: it inhibits the production of testosterone, a male sex hormone, and therefore it decreases the problems of high testosterone or testosterone sensitivity (male hair loss, prostate enlargement) while creating the same problems as if a person had low testosterone (decreased lean muscle mass and sexual function, impotence).

Unfortunately, many unsuspecting guys concerned about hair thinning do not know that using Propecia can result in side effects far more devastating than a bald spot.

The research cannot tell us overall what proportion of men whom just take finasteride for male pattern baldness will experience persistent sexual part effects after stopping the drug.

Subjects reported new-onset persistent sexual dysfunction associated with the use of finasteride Propecia: 94% developed low libido, 92% developed erectile dysfunction, 92% developed decreased arousal, and 69% developed problems with orgasm.” The study also found that the average number of sexual episodes per month was lower and the total sexual dysfunction score increased according to the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (P < 0.0001 for both).” The average length of Propecia use was 28 months and the average duration of persistent sexual side effects was 40 months from the time of discontinuation. (1)

This same study found that most men who developed persistent sexual side effects lasting =3 months with the use of Propecia continued to experience erectile dysfunction for many months or years despite stopping the drug, which lead the researcher to suggest the possibility that the dysfunction may be permanent. (2)

Using natural DHT blockers vs Propecia

If your short pattern baldness is infact caused by DHT then there are different treatments that you can use to improve your scalp and skin conditions to foster better hair growth and improve natural hair production.

An added bonus is that DHT blockers have also been shown to significantly increase prostate health, so a natural treatment for hair loss also works as a safe preventative for prostate problems.

1. Saw Palmetto – This is a berry-producing plant native to the Americas, and one which is believed to inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. This is the enzyme responsible for the conversion of testosterone to DHT, and therefore acts as a preemptive DHT blocker.

If you’re dead against finasteride there are other touted DHT blockers (besides Saw Palmetto too) but they’re poorly documented because they’re not strictly for hairloss; there is no common consensus on dosage or statistics on side effects, so in essence I’d say they’re even riskier than finasteride.

The best natural DHT blocker and best alternative to Propecia in our opinion is Profollica. Profollica™ is a standout product in the hair regrowth industry. Because rather than simply “cleaning” the scalp, Profollica™ uses the latest medical research to deal with the root cause of men’s hair loss: excess DHT (dihydrotestosterone)!

But there’s more to hair regrowth than just inhibiting DHT production. That’s why most Saw Palmetto and other touted natural DHT blockers based hair loss pills don’t work.

Medical experts with experience of treating male pattern baldness have found that combining Propecia with Minoxidil enhances the treatment, producing faster results. Profollica has come up with a siilar treatment plan, but MUCH safer and still effective.

You also need to create a prime environment for hair regrowth. That’s why Profollica™ has evolved into a very effective three-step hair regrowth system:

Step #1 — Inhibits The Production of Excess DHT with a daily supplement that nourishes the body with a patented, medically approved formulation of 100% natural herbals.

Step #2 — Eliminates Harmful Scalp Bacteria with our scalp purifying shampoo that actually helps to gently eliminate more serious scalp issues like dandruff, psoriasis, oily hair, itchy scalp and MORE!

Step #3 — Encourages FAST, Healthy Growth with the follicle stimulator (a.k.a. The Activator Gel), which is sprayed at the roots of the hair after each shampoo. The Activator Gel w/Trichogen is gently massaged throughout hair and down to the scalp, and then left in (don’t wash it out). In 90 percent of users, the site claims, this has been “clinically proven to visibly improve hair growth, promote a healthier growth phase, [and] actively block the formulation of DHT.”

Unlike other natural DHT blockers, Profollica™ contains not just one or two natural ingredients, but a proprietary formula that tackles the problem of male pattern baldness head on. When applied according to the instructions, expect hair loss to come to a dead stop and at the same time your hair follicles will receive stimulation, leading to regrowth.

2. Procerin is our second choice after Profollica™.

It also contains Saw Palmetto Extract and other natural DHT blockers such as Beta Sitosterol and Gotu Kola, pumpkin seeds and Siberian Ginseng so this particular serum is packed with ingredients that are well known for blocking DHT and promoting hair growth.

Although pumpkin seed oil will not be something that springs to mind when people think about hair regeneration, the truth is that there is quite a lot of quality evidence to suggest that it can act as a good natural DHT blocker due to it containing the steroid delta-7 stearine, which may compete with DHT production.

Procerin, with Saw Palmetto, Magnesium, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin B-6, Pyroxidine 5mg, CJ-11 Factor, CJ-9 Factor, and a proprietary blend of Gotu Kola, Nettles, Pumpkin seed meal, Siberian Ginseng, Yohimbe, Muira Puma Root, Uwa Ursi and more as its ingredients, is a mix of natural DHT blockers, vitamins and herbal/mineral supplements.

Regardless of whether you are combating thin hair as a result of age or male pattern baldness or due to DHT dihydrotestosterone levels, another type of illness, Procerin’s DHT blocker shampoo and anti-DHT product is proven to work.

3. MAK Zoe shampoo

MAK Zoe shampoo contains Natural DHT blockers Baicapil, Propolis, Sepicap MP, Saw Palmetto, Licorice Extract to help reduce hair loss.

The proprietary blend of ingredients includes Vitamin E, Vitamin B complex, Argan oil, Tea tree oil, Caffeine, Keratin, Biotin, Saw Palmetto and a number of natural DHT blockers and essential and natural rejuvenating oils and ingredients all proven to nourish problematic balding areas on the scalp and help to stimulate hair regrowth.

4. Extra Strength Saw Palmetto Supplement And Prostate Health – Prostate Support Formula to Reduce Frequent Urination and DHT Blocker to Prevent Hair Loss.

5. Groganics DHT Grow Thick Hair Fattening Shampoo is a naturally-made hair loss shampoo that promotes clean, healthy hair and is also an effective DHT dihydrotestosterone blocker.

6. Folliform DHT Blocker for Men and Women are made from natural ingredients like pumpkin seed, saw palmetto, Pygeum extract, and pumpkin seed.

By providing ingredients including Saw Palmetto, and Pygeum Africanum that help block DHT a hormone that causes 95% of the hair loss in men and women, this is also a top of the line natural DHT Blocker.

There is uncertainty about the explanation of why Pygeum extract works, but it has demonstrated to be a very effectual hair loss treatment with negligible risk of side effects.

User reviews

I accepted Propecia treatment to improve the thickness of my hair based on information corroborated by Merck and my doctor that side effects are extremely rare and not permanent, however, that has proven to not be the case.

I have had some side-effects e.g. erectile problems, libido issues, lethargy, constantly dozing off at any time of the day etc., after taking this prostate medication for one year.

I have been taking 1mg finasteride medication for the past 4 years for male pattern baldness and have had pretty good results both in maintaining and regrowing new hair.

I take a DHT blocker, use a good anti hair loss shampoo and massage my scalp three times a week with an infra red massage machine…..

I would be shocked to see somebody with hair loss that had a healthy scalp pH so adding (quality) lactobacillus probiotics to your diet along with healing a leaky gut (many resources on the internet tell you how to do that) will not only alter skin pH to a healthy level but stop the chronic inflammation which, as is so rightly mentioned in this article, the catalyst for every disease/condition which we develop.

I have recently seen an increasing number of men who have developed significant degrees of clinical hypogonadism – low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, reduced sexual sensations and listlessness, fatigue and/or “brain fog” – while either taking finasteride or after stopping the medication, even long after stopping it.

I don’t recommend using natural minoxidil because it usually doesn’t have the same effect that other baldness treatments have.

I was a long time propecia user (8 years) starting at the age of 22. Since beginning I’ve had side effects, though they were pretty mild and so I didn’t worry too much about them.

I always recommend having your scalp checked by a dermatologist to determine the exact cause of your hair loss.

I did hear some interesting facts on a treatment called ‘Trichagen’, but I suspect that if this treatment works, then we have to deal with the possibilities of side-effects.

I still use Rogaine, but in my opinion it only slows hair loss and does not stop it, or re-grow hair.

I dont really want to put like 10 different oils every day + fancy shampoons and so on. I want to use 1 simple method involving shampoo and maybe some topical mixture.

I don’t have any issues with libido (been on finasteride for about 2 months now), but I have noticed reduced sensation when I have an orgasm and until recently I felt like my penis was just a rubber thing attached to my body, but that feeling is going and my orgasms are slowly returning back to normal.

Dr. Irwig says it is crucial physicians treating male pattern hair loss discuss the possibility of persistent sexual side effects associated with finasteride with their patients.. Although the generally rare sexual side effects of finasteride and dutasteride have been mentioned at urology meetings, information about potentially irreversible consequences hasn’t yet reached the larger community of prescribing physicians, such as dermatologists and primary care doctors – or their patients, said researcher Abdulmaged M. Traish, a professor of biochemistry and urology at Boston University School of Medicine.

Since women are CAUTIONED AGAINST using Propecia (1mg finasteride) due to potential side effects that may affect foetus development and cause birth defects, saw palmetto may seem to be a natural alternative for women who are suffering from hair loss. The proprietary blend of natural ingredients – including saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil, and beta sitosterol – have been demonstrated in numerous trials to help reduce pattern hair loss in men.

That 5a-reductase enzyme, which does seem to cause hair follicle death, turns out to be extremely important for the health of any man. How do I know this?

I’ve been taking a generic form of Finasteride for the past year, and let me share with you my journey in androgenous hell. I started with 1-mg a day, but after about 6 months I reduced the amount of .5-mg by cutting the pills in half. Despite taking a reduced amount, the effects were absolutely crippling on my life as a man. It’s been roughly one month since I’ve stopped using this poison and now my life is slowly returning back to normal.

The first six months were uneventful, and I was even happy with the results: hairs were falling out of my hair much slower than normal. My hair loss was not anything extreme – I used to have long bangs covering my forehead and it was receding. I was not losing any hair on the back of my head. My reasons for taking the pill were for maximum vanity – I wanted to preserve every last hair on my head if at all possible. The price I ended up paying has made me realize my hubris, although in my defense there was no way to know how bad shit could get.

At the end of these first six months, I also happened to break things off with a girl was I was banging back in last November. This would be the last time I would have sex. I am still currently in the dry spell.

What started the downward spiral was that one day, at the gym, after doing some routine squats, I felt a sharp joint pain in my hip where the femur is connected. I figured I pulled a tendon and I needed to stay out of the gym for a few weeks while it recovered.

A month later, the pain was still there, and I had lost 5 pounds of muscle mass. I was down to 155 pounds at 5’8”. I hated going to doctors so I figured I would just take the month of January to rest some more. I read online that tendons can take a long time to heal.

Three months later, pain was still there. I was down to 150 pounds. I was becoming depressed because I couldn’t lift at the gym and I was starting to walk with a limp. I also noticed that for the past six months, I had absolutely no desire to find women or have sex. I forced myself to go out dancing to pick up some chicks, but when I was dancing with them I never felt like asking them out nor did I feel any desire to have sex. I thought at first since it was deep in winter I was just being lazy, but even looking at porn did little to stimulate me. I wondered if I was just getting old and weak?

6 months later, the pain in my femur at the hip was still there. I weighed 135 pounds. 25 pounds of muscle mass gone. I could see my ribs when I sucked in my stomach. My strength and energy had disappeared. I was constantly in need of naps. At my step-mother’s 60th birthday party, I fell asleep on a couch in spite of not having a single drink and it only being 9pm. At this point, my father came over to me and asked me to see a doctor, and told me he was worried sick for my health. I looked in the mirror and saw this:

At this point, I wasn’t sure what the hell was wrong with me. So I googled, “Propecia weight loss” and I found this forum:

    http://www.propeciahelp.com/forum/

A forum of thousands of men, all who have been destroyed by this drug. The stories were horrifying, and most of them far worse than mine – men who not only had lost all functionality of testosterone, but many had quit for years and still never recovered!!!

At this point, I felt like a total fool. I threw my pills in the trash but saved a few for the Doctor to look at.

The stories on this forum range from guys who took the pill for 6 years before noticing their health was deteriorating, all the way to extreme cases of men who took the pill for one month and their dick shut off, permanently, forever.

From reading on this forum, I discovered another disturbing fact: 99% of doctors are unable to detect what is wrong with men who are taking propecia. Blood tests do not reveal any lowered amount of testosterone, or any other anomalies. Thus the men on the forum came up with a different hypothesis.

5a-reductase is similar to the spark plug in a car engine. Without a spark plug in an engine, gasoline will pump into the cylinders but no ignition will happen. Likewise propecia shuts off this enzyme which makes all the testosterone functionally useless. Thus when you take blood samples, no medical professional will detect anything wrong with you.

Furthermore, the joint pain was caused by the shrinkage of muscles – they squeeze around the joint causing it grind together. I fear I may have caused permanent damage to my femur/hip joint as a result, but as I am writing this the pain has lessened considerable as my muscle mass grows back. I am currently back at 141 pounds. Still another 19 pounds of muscle mass to go. I went out dancing last week and I felt the rush of dancing with pretty girls once again. My manhood will survive this.

Don’t let it happen to you though. If you are currently taking propecia or any other alternative, STOP RIGHT NOW! It’s just a matter of time before you get fucked over by this poison. Some men’s bodies handle the poison better than others; but it’s the dose which makes the poison so the longer you poison yourself, the more likely bad shit is going to happen to you.

Your testosterone is way more valuable than your hair. Trust me. I learned the hard way. Most guys don’t realize just how essential this gift from God is until you don’t have it. Without testosterone functioning properly, you cannot grow muscles, fuck women, or even think straight. It’s essential to every function as a man.

Better hair replacement technology is coming in the next ten years anyways. Hair cloning will be upon us before you know it. Don’t risk your health on this scam foisted upon men. There are currently class action lawsuits against the company, although as usual because it only affects men most people don’t give a fuck. Propecia is engaged in false advertising on two counts:

    1. They say negative side effects only happen to 2%, when it’s clear from the forum I linked above that it’s way higher than that. My guess is somewhere between 10%-20% of men suffer terrible effects.

    2. They say negative side effects are only temporary, when in fact tons of men suffer from permanent damage, either in loss of sex function, muscle function, or joint function.

This pill is yet another example of big pharma selling bullshit in order to make profits. Don’t let yourself be a victim of this insanely evil industry.

    Propecia facts first

Lets gets straighten out some important myths, facts and figures on the medication Finasteride for hair loss. #1. Finasteride is used to treat male pattern baldness. And, its action is only at the crown and in the middle of the scalp. It is not helpful in treating receding hair line, except when started very early when the hair follicles are still in the miniaturized state. #2. Finasteride must be used by adult men only over the age of 18. I suggest over the age of 20 years. Because this is the hormone responsible for the development of secondary male characters like beard growth, chest hair and so on. But once these male characteristics are developed, blocking DHT does not alter beard growth or body hair. #3. Women and children must never use this drug.

    4. How to use Finasteride? 1 milligram tablet has to be taken by mouth, And, with or without food does not matter! Preferably early morning is the best time, when testosterone levels are higher and avoid at night to reduce most of its side effects like loss of libido and other similar effects which we will discuss shortly. You ingest 1 mg daily or 1mg on alternate days depending on your hair loss intensity and balancing the benefits versus the side effects. #5. How Long to use Finasteride to see the results? Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time each day like early morning as already discussed. It may take from 3 to 6 months to notice some beneficial effect. #6. Can I discontinue the medication once I achieve the desired results? No, Never! You must continue to take this medication to maintain your hair growth. When you stop taking finasteride, any benefit you achieved in hair growth is generally lost within 12 months.

#7. What are the Side effects of Finasteride? Well! this topic is controversial. Many studies have been conducted on this. The incidence of side effects like erectile dysfunction, ejaculation impairment, and decreased libido has been confirmed. But the incidence is very low, like 1 in 1000 patients and even less in most studies. Some studies reveal that most of these side effects men experience are psychological. While some other studies indicate long term use of this drug can cause irreversible side effects like erectile dysfunction, ejaculation impairment, and decreased libido. But this is true for 5 milligram daily dose!, which is used for the treatment of prostate enlargement. However if you experience these effects, try your best to avoid it psychologically, diverting your mind into daily exercise for atleast 30 minutes in evenings and taking finasteride 1 mg in early mornings. If you still experience these side effects, discuss with your doctor and stop this medication. You can make a decision whether the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

#8. Other side effects: Other rare side effects like allergic reaction to the drug is extremely unlikely. You might experience allergic rash or something like that but extremely rare. Another rare side effect is occurrence of man boobs, medically called gynaecomastia. But its very rare. You might even feel tenderness in the part and sometimes even some pain or tenderness in your testicles. #9. Risk of Prostate Cancer: Finasteride is not approved for prevention of prostate cancer. There is a lot of controversy on this topic. Some research studies show it prevents the occurence of prostate cancer, while some other studies say it may slightly increase the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks. #10 Do I need to use finasteride tablet in combination with topical Minoxidil ? Yes! this combination if one of the most effective treatments for hair loss and hair thinning since many many years. Minoxidil acts by increasing the local scalp vascularity and finasteride acts by blocking DHT in male pattern baldness

Background: I’m 27 yo, male. I started taking finasteride about 6 months ago – I’m at the end of my first 6 month supply which I bought in bulk from simpleonlinedoctor (Australian, with a Brisbane-based pharmacy, and they do the online script. Not as cheap as some overseas suppliers but the cheapest Australian based one I found).

I do, however, get, or did get, minor-slight above minor side effects, including less frequent morning wood, lower libido, and slightly weaker erections. I also had the pains in the testicles for about a two week period about 2 months in but that subsided.

To deal with the sides, I started taking ZMA (for the zinc, but added bonus of better sleep), l-arginine, l-citruline, and a multi-supplement cap with edpimedium, maca etc etc. I frankly don’t know if they helped the sides, or if my body naturally got use to finasteride, or if I’ve fooled myself into thinking I’m back to normal. I believe it to be the former though, and would prefer to not have to take the supps (although sometimes I do have extra hard/thick wood, but I can’t get the combo right on demand and I try different brands etc…)

If it’s relevant, I’ve got what I believe to be good genes in that I generally look fit with decent shoulders even though I don’t work out but do occasionally do water sports – I might have had a higher than normal testosterone level than the typical male.

I also bought a 6 month supply of topical minoxidil 5% oil but I’m very VERY slack at applying it. It takes too long to dry which makes me not want to use it at night, and drips down my face when I apply it. It also makes my hair look a bit suss, so I don’t use it in the morning. Add to this the recommendation is allowing it to dry naturally on the scalp for at least 4 hours.

I believe my hair has so far become slightly, thicker, stronger, and that even some very tiny midget hairs have started to regrow on the receding lines. A close friend has even commented that they’ve noticed it starting to look thicker.

In looking for alternatives to finasteride, I’ve come across Foligain Stimulating Hair Regrowth Supplement 120 Caplets on, among other sites, a site called Biovea. I’ve bought Foligain shampoo from Biovea (which I believe to be overpriced and I don’t know if it helps), and I bought my minoxidil from Biovea. So I trust Biovea in terms of delivering the product and they list prices in AUD which is always a plus. But, despite the rave reviews on the Foligain Caplets, I’m skeptical.

    Topical alternatives

Has anyone used a brand of Saw Palmetto that’s worked? I purchased the liquid extract from http://www.herbalremedies.com to apply to my face and scalp. It works to keep the facial hair away. My SO takes the Sundown Naturals brand and he likes it. I take a local store brand (160mg) and it seems to be working for me. Some people have to take more. Every one is different. How much are you taking?

Anyone used a brand of garlic that’s worked? I started using the Kyolic Aged Odorless Liquid Garlic Extract. It doesn’t taste good but it doesn’t give me headaches either.

Is there anything else that’s helped anyone? Emu oil has shown positive effects in activating dormant hair follicles. http://www.emuoilnaturally.com/research.html

Topical Spironolactone can be purchased here—–

    I m trying nature's way

My family has a history of men getting a reseeding hairline in their late 20s so I am try to keep that at bay. What I have been using…

    – Herbal Milk Thistle
Extremely effective in warding off hair loss. Its protective against many types of chemical toxins including alcohol. Also great for your liver too.

    – Beta Sitosterol with Fish Oil
Contains a mixture of phytersterols. Phytersterols (sterols) have anti-androgenic properties. This is the substance that is able to block DHT. Also reduced risk of a hear attack and is generally good for heart function.

    – Pumpkin Seed Oil
Pumpkin seed oil breaks down DHT via the liver. Also stimulates hair growth if you have already lost some hair.

    – Pygeum & Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto is probably the best known natural dht blocker. Its is a highly effective anti-androgen supplement. It lowers levels of DHT in the body by blocking 5 alpha-reductase and it also blocks receptor sites on cell membranes required for cells to absorb DHT.

Pygeum reduces the levels of DHT in the blood and reduces the number of sites where the dht can attach. This includes hair follicles where DHT would bind. When combined with Saw Palmetto it has a synergetic effect. I get both of these together in the same pill.

    – Purica Pure L-Lysine
Helps everything else work better and has another nice side effect of reducing the chances of infections of the sexual kind.

I also take green tea extract, have cold showers, don’t over style or stress my hair (not being rough with a towel after a shower for example) and change my hair style up every so often to give it a chance to recover.

My hair is solid and a lot of this is just preventive since this is the first year I have seen some very slight thinning in my hair.

I bought some Pumpkin Seed Oil and the Pygeum & Saw Palmetto. Hope this bro science works Smile
    I’m also taking multi-vitamin, zinc, and b-12

If you’re genetically susceptible to hair loss, there’s no easy 1-2 punch in preventing it. However, it’s quite possible to reverse or maintain your current levels of hair by employing a “cocktail” of ingredients. Many popular shampoos and other topical products contain many of the following ingredients. As a good rule, though, be sure to use a few of them.

    Minoxidil

This product should be a staple in your hair growth arsenal. It won’t block any hormones, but it should help promote healthier blood flow and stimulate growth

    A Topical DHT Blocker

You can use either a topical ketoconazole or spironolactone product. Both work on the scalp via similar mechanisms. However, if your hair loss is due to bacteria or a fungus, ketoconazole may be the better option.

    Progesterone Cream

Progesterone creams are optional, but are much more important in older men (40+) with diminishing progesterone levels.

    Soy Isoflavones and Capsaicin

These two compounds increase levels of IGF-1 in the scalp.

    Phytoestrogens

Don’t go overboard on these, but rather opt for healthier choices such as those found in pomegranates or even the natural anti-oxidant resveratrol.

Propecia is a complete no for me, and some friends that I talked to about PRP said they have not noticed any results. I have found some natural DHT blocker online that have zinc, biton and pumpkin seeds etc. But a quick check on fakespot.com says that most of the reviews are fake. Do you know if any natural DHT blocker pill that work? These articles might help you:
