XTERRA Fitness ERG400 Air & Magnetic Resistance Folding Rower review

The XTERRA Fitness ERG400 Air & Magnetic Resistance Folding Rower is a tough rowing machine to beat. Reasonably priced, it is built for people of all fitness levels. It has the features that any experience rower is looking for. The ERG400 Rower has a strong aluminum rail with a large cushioned seat so that you remain comfortable throughout your routine.

Details

The rail provides a smooth rowing movement. XTERRA uses a combination air and magnetic resistance system on the XTERRA Fitness ERG400 Air & Magnetic Resistance Folding Rower. With this you get the benefit of the natural rowing feel from the air resistance, but you can also add intensity with the 16 magnetic resistance settings. It's the best of both worlds.

The XTERRA ERG400 also has the best computer console that you will find in this price range. Where the competition is providing a basic console that gives you standard readouts while exercising, the ERG400 Rower has a console that is packed with exercise profiles. These profiles provide you with intense workouts already loaded into the machine. Using these, you'll know you're getting a great workout.

Assembly of the XTERRA ERG400 Rower is beyond easy. Most of the main components are assembled and they only need to be connected. The packaging comes with a fully illustrated assembly manual and a couple wrenches to help with the process. Assembly should take one person no longer than 30 minutes to complete.

The most surprising feature of the XTERRA ERG400 Rowing Machine is its console. The console has eight workout programs to help you achieve your fitness goals. We don't think you'll be able to find another rowing machine with this feature. In fact, you'll probably need to spend at least another $250 to find a rowing machine that offers pre-programmed workouts.

The workouts on the ERG400 Rower adjust intensity and simulate rolling terrain, valleys, ramps and mountains. There is also a fat burn profile. If you don't like these, you can always customize your own workout in manual or with the user profile.

The XTERRA ERG400 Rower is a well made, well designed exercise machine. It has a strong aluminum frame that is backed with probably the best warranty that you will find in this price range. We really love the resistance system on this rower as well. It combines air and magnetic resistance which provides superior intensity and a smooth and quiet rowing experience.

There are 16 levels of electronic resistance that allow you to adjust your intensity for the perfect workout. The last design feature we really like is the foldable design. With a 6' footprint, the ability to fold really helps with storage.

On paper the XTERRA ERG400 Rower is one of the best designed and equipped rowing machines in this price range. However, there have been a few issues with this machine's flywheel. There have been more than a few users who had problems in the first few months of operation. The issues include the rowing cable not retracting and/or the flywheel itself breaking.

Mine arrived on Friday (1 week from order, on Prime) and it took about an hour all-in to put together and set up. Tools and step-by-step instructions are included. It was a pain to get out of the packaging, though. I've only used high-end rowers in the past at the gym so I don't have much to compare this with. I'd agree that the stroke length could do with being another 6″. I am 6'2 and I hit the end stops on the row. But, I have gotten used to it. The resistance levels are good and the variety of programs more than enough. Screen is clear and visible while working out. This folds easily and the seat beam locks in the upright position, making it secure and easy move around and store when not in use.

Regards comparing it to a Concept 2, I considered this. Fact is, this is less than half the price. I don't think I'd ever justify spending around $1000 for a rower. If you're in the market for a well-built machine at a reasonable price, I'd say this fits the bill.

Purchased this unit early 2015. Used 4-5 days per week, 10-45 mins depending on weight or cardio day routine. By the 10 month the bearing pack in the flywheel failed not returning the strap. Contacted customer service (Daniel, who was helpful and took care of all issues promptly), new flywheel sent at no cost, since unit was still under warranty. Installed new flywheel and it to failed after 2 pulls. Customer service shipped another flywheel w/o  charge. This flywheel lasted 6 months. Contacted customer service, they honored the warranty beyond the 12 month period, since the original failed before it expired. New flywheel shipped (no cost). New flywheel installed and this too failed, Dec.2016. I placed the unit on the junk pile for the garbage carrier to collect. DO NOT spend your money on this item. Although customer service is outstanding, quality and dependability of unit is not acceptable. Spend an additional $200-250 and purchase a Lifecore unit, which is a level above Spirit fitness.

Received machine, set it up easily enough. Started to use it, tried to set up program to use but it would pause after 30 seconds and the resistance would go down to 0. Tried every way to program so it would not do this but unable to do it. Called customer service and they tried to help me. They were unable to fix the problem, had me take it apart and try to fix the speed sensor. Boy was that a pain. Still wouldn't work so they sent me a new console. Put that on my self and still no luck. Sent the machine back to amazon, lots of fun getting it back into box! I was stupid enough to order a second machine and guess what!!! the exact same problem, no i don't want to push start every 30 seconds while i am rowing. Called customer service again and was just told that they couldn't do anything and just send it back…again. So here I go putting this piece of crap back into that box!

Product is great. It took about 20 minutes to put it together. The rowing motion is smooth. There are multiple levels of resistance and 6 pre programmed workouts. The only issue I have is that it took 2 weeks for it to be delivered. Once it arrived it's smooth sailing. I've only done one work out on it so far, but it worked well. I also like the fact that I can fold it up to take up less space. I plan on using this daily. I used the Concept 2 at the BLR resort in Florida, and I can tell you I like this one almost as much as the concept 2. So for home use, save the extra $450 and get the XTerra.

On paper, this thing looks like a great deal. It had all the features I was looking for, at a price point that that's way cheaper than its competition. But now I know why that's the case. It stopped working the SECOND time I used it!!! The resistance adjustment mechanism stopped working because stroke rate sensor circuit failed. The companies customer care was helpful in that they sent me replacement parts. but that's where the help stops. warranty doesn't include labor, which means you have to fix things yourself, or pay someone to do it. I'm an engineer so that wasn't a problem for me, but after getting spares for different parts twice, the machine still wasn't fixed. Customer care said they don't know what was wrong and couldn't help me any more. They told me to return it Amazon since it was still under a month from date of purchase. This is probably a failed product from the company since they don't even sell it anymore. Don't bother with this product.
